Liviu Librescu sacrifice
Liviu Librescu, a Holocaust survivor and respected engineering professor, became a symbol of courage during the tragic Virginia Tech shooting on April 16, 2007.
At 76 years old, Librescu used his body to block the classroom door in Norris Hall while a gunman attempted to enter. As bullets were fired through the door, he instructed his 22 students to escape through the windows. Every student survived—Librescu did not.
Born in Romania, Librescu endured the horrors of the Holocaust as a Jewish child, living in a ghetto during World War II. He later built a distinguished career in aeronautical engineering, teaching in Israel before moving to the United States and serving at Virginia Tech for over two decades.
The attack occurred on Yom HaShoah, adding a profound historical connection to his life story. Then U.S. President George W. Bush honored Librescu’s bravery, recognizing how he gave his life to protect his students.
He was laid to rest in Ra’anana, Israel. Today, his legacy continues through the lives he saved and the powerful example of selflessness he left behind.
